Yanking a knob off a bedroom door with a claw hammer is downright stupid. Which is more expensive: a locksmith callout, or a new door fitted to the doorway and a new lock fitted? That method may work on simple tie-bolt setups with weak screws, but not all bedrooms are like that. Do that with a hollow-core door and you’ll put the hammer through it faster than you’ll pull the knob off. Don’t use credit-cards to shim a door, use a section of a milk bottle or an icecream container. I am a locksmith, and I’ve seen some really stupid things done by people who’ve thought they could just hack and slash at a bedroom door to open it. Seriously, call a professional if you’re not absolutely positive about what you’re doing. If you’ve got a keyed lock on your bedroom or inside the house, either remove and replace it with a Privacy Set (like your toiletbathroom), or remove it and take it to a locksmith, get them to rekey it the same as your house entry door key. Anyone who has installed a bedroom door lock may have noticed a short steel rod with a flat tip at one end. These often get discarded with the box the lock came in because they aren’t part of the assembly. But the first time someone inadvertently locks the door on the way out of the bedroom, the purpose of these rods becomes clear. They are keys that allow you to unlock the door from the outside. If you don’t have this key, you can use a tool found in sewing machine drawers and at hardware stores.

Turn the key both directions. There’s no universal standard for which way a key turns to unlock a door. Even if you know which way is “unlock,” turning the key further toward the “locked” direction sometimes causes the lock to unjam. If you can get the key to turn a short distance past the full locked position, rotate it back the other way in a quick, smooth motion and you may overcome the jam.

I had to join in on this conversation. Unfortunately yes, i locked myself out my room this evening, and googled how to unlock my bedroom door. Never broke into any door, never had to until now. So I tryed the credit card method, took me less then a minute. I even have the wood wedge frame in front, making it a bit difficult. you Just have to start at the top and work ur way to the lock. I actually spent more time reading this nonsense on the locksmith saying what not to do. Of course he would say to call a professional. So YES, the credit card theory DOES work.

The lock on a bedroom door is designed for privacy and not for security or keeping intruders out. This is fortunate in the event that you need to open a locked bedroom door because in an emergency, a high-security lock would be hard to hack. If you have small children in your home, it is not uncommon for children to lock themselves in a bedroom, so it can be handy to know how to bypass a lock. Here is a convenient, step-by-step guide that will show you how to pick the lock on the bedroom door quickly and easily.

Push or pull the door as you turn the key. With many older doors, you need to pressure the door as you fiddle with the key, as the warped door is bending the lock at an awkward angle. Try applying pressure in each direction: up, down, toward you, and away from you. Use as much force as you can without losing your balance once the door opens. If you are using a friend’s key, call and ask him about it. He is likely to know the door’s idiosyncrasies.
